Ben Mathews is an award-winning filmmaker, actor, and coach. As a director, his work has won over 25 international awards for film, television, comedy, advertising, and documentary, and screened at film festivals all over the world, including Cannes. Ben is the only Australian ever nominated for the Student Academy Awards for his short film Emily. As a writer, he was nominated for an Australian Writer’s Guild AWGIE Award. In addition to film, he has written and directed television for the ABC and MTV, such as BedHead and Deadbeat Dads, documentaries, web series, and is currently developing two feature films, Harvey’s Wake and The Act. Most recently he wrote the children’s animation Dimitri World. As a commercial director, Ben has won two Silver Telly Awards and a Bronze Pencil. He has written and directed TVCs for clients including Microsoft, TedX, AMP, TMGM, The Australian Open, Manscaped, Pilot, and DiDi.

As an actor Ben has appeared in over 30 plays, on film, and in television. He has worked at the Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir Street, and the Darlinghurst Theatre Company, among others. His film and television credits include Love My Way (Fox), In a Woman’s World (ABC), feature film Everything in Between, the award-winning film Nineteen, and the upcoming film Allegedly. He’s worked with the likes of Academy Award nominees Jackie Weaver and Garth Davis, as well as Rose Byrne, Neil Armfield, Brendan Cowell, and Wayne Blair.

Ben is also one of the country’s most sought-after acting coaches. He is the founder of ACTING MASTERY in Sydney, is the host of The Acting Mastery Podcast, and has a following of 142K followers on Instagram. He has previously taught acting at NIDA, Screenwise, AMAW Sydney, and The Hub Studio among others, and taught directing for the Bachelor of Arts students at AFTRS.

Ben has coached clients to great success on a multitude of shows and films, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Thor: Love & Thunder, Shang-Chi, Nine Perfect Strangers, Maid, The Wilds, Fauda, Young Rock, Sabrina, Stargate Origins, Ash vs. The Evil Dead, and Hacksaw Ridge among others, as well as theatre productions for the Donmar Warehouse and National Theatre in London, the Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir Street, Melbourne Theatre Company and QTC.

Ben is an acting graduate of the Atlantic Theater Company, New York, where he studied under David Mamet, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, and Clark Gregg, among others. He is both a directing & screenwriting graduate of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney where he was awarded the Kenneth B Myer Scholarship for Exceptional Talent and won the Foxtel Scholarship for Exceptional New Talent.
